Like the stock market. Recessionary periods help to gauge the level of consumer confidence.

Are people not making enough money? Are prices for goods and services too high. Is it taking too long for Hurricane ravaged areas to get back on their feet?

If people aren’t buying, then companies aren’t selling, then jobs are lost, then people don’t pay taxes, etc etc. A complete lack of growth can trigger a severe downward spiral fairly quickly.
