Is skipping meals that bad?

I’ve skipped more meals since I’ve been “out on my own” than I ever did in college. Much of this comes from not wanting to pack a lunch for the office, so I eat out. Well, what if I don’t want to spend any money that day? Then, I skip lunch. More often though I skip dinner, since I can justify paying $5 for lunch if I don’t eat dinner or eat very little for dinner.

It seems that everyone says don’t skip meals. Well, I think I’ve actually lost weight in the last few months. I’m definitely not exercising more. My guess is that I’m just consuming less calories in a day.

What I hate is the stereotype that if one skips a meal, then one will grab a cupcake or eat ice cream instead to satisfy the craving.

“When people become physiologically famished their body craves calorie dense foods. People who stick to a nighttime eating pattern typically eat in excess of 2000 calories a day - too much for the average sedentary American to lose weight. After denying themselves food all day, nighttime nibblers reward themselves for their resistance. Once they get their minds into the reward mode it diminishes their resistance to overeating.”

I don’t buy cupcakes and ice cream, so I don’t have them in the house. It’s an easy thing to do–don’t by desserts at the store. Force yourself to have to make all your desserts or go out and buy them ($3 sundae, ouch!), then you will hesitate making them and thus eating them. Just because junk food is in your office, doesn’t mean you are eating it.
