The best way to sync an Ipod (with Smart playlists)

I seriously dislike iTunes Playlists. Now, I’m not you’re typical user. I clear my library and re-import all my mp3s every few months. I have many more songs than I have room on my iPod, and I tend to add and subtract hundreds of sound files often.

If you move an mp3 from its original location, it breaks the link in the playlist. What is one to do, since iTunes playlists are lists of specific files? Smart playlists!

You will need to select “New Smart Playlist” from the File menu. Then, select “Comment” ,”contains” and type in “ipod” in the blank. This will create a playlist of all sound files that have “ipod” in their comment field. This is actually stored inside the mp3 or mp4 file. Which means you can copy the file to another library or remove the file from your iTunes library for a week and then add it back and it will be added back to the playlist automatically.

So go and right click a song you want to add to your Smart Playlist and select “Get Info.” Then type “ipod” in the comment field under the “Info” tab. Then sync your iPod and it will add the song you just edited.

If you have a library that is too big for you iPod and you don’t sync all of your library, you will need to add this smart playlist to the sync list under your iPod preferences “iPod” tab under Edit>>Preferences (on the PC).
