Welcome to the neigborhood: my car window shattered

My car was broken into on the first night in my new neighborhood. No, I’m NOT suggesting that any of my neighbors broke my car window, although (as Emily Craighead said) that teenager that asked to cut my lawn for $10 looked kind of shady. The only items that were stolen were my $100 aftermarket car stereo and $5 in quarters. Aftermarket stereos are incredibly easy to steal. You can practically rip them out with a screwdriver. The irony is that I’m moving from a low income apartment complex that has had two murders in the last two years to a neighborhood right next to the nicest area in Indianapolis. At my old apartment, I’ve left my iPod out in clear view in my car and no one had stolen it. Thankfully, Rachel removed my iPod from my car before it was broken into. Maybe the lesson is that you don’t steal from your own.

Reason car was broken into?

It is possible that my car stolen only because it had an aftermarket stereo and was parked on the street. The other opinion is that my house was cased while we were moving that afternoon (big orange U-Haul in driveway, hint, hint) and the theives thought there might be something left in my car. Either way, I’ve got a rear vent window to replace on my Honda Civic.

Fact: Considerate criminals are not Atlantic Monthly readers

Maybe these were considerate criminals, since they broke the cheapest window to replace. After getting over my anger, I was kind of hoping they would have taken the greater than 100 magazines in the trunk (everything from The Atlantic Monthly to Time to National Geographics from the 1980’s that I was recycling). No such luck though with getting rid of the magazines. Oh, well, I doubt they would have recycled them afterwards.
